A friend recently posted a picture of the adorable Iris Apfel on my Facebook page with the tagline "This will be you in 50years" little did she know that I was already wishing I had Iris' excessive style (or more likely access to her jewellery collection) I'd fallen in love with her, and I've actually had this half written blog sitting in my inbox waiting to show the world how stylish this woman is! I hope you fall in love with her as I did.
This 91 year old treasure once worked for Women's Wear Daily, and as an interior designer. She worked in textiles with her husband during which she was involved in decorating the White House a number of times over.
Over her life she cultivated a much loved witty and individual style, never being afraid to mix high and low end fashion, combining vintage and flee market finds! And god knows how many pairs of round framed spectacles she had.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art Showcased 60 objects from her collection of styled outfits and jewels in 2005/2006 named Rara
Avis: Selections from the Iris Barrel Apfel Collection.
In Iris' book, more is most definitely more!
If you are not afraid to make a statement try wearing more than one necklace.
I layer mine by matching metal shades or colours, they don't have to be exactly the same, but as long as there is a similar shade between them it will work.
Also working with differing lengths helps. And for best layering, try for minimum of three necklaces.
As for the rest, cuffs on both wrists work, matching or not, otherwise stack a bunch on one arm. And for rings I like to wear two on my right hand and and one on the index/middle finger on the left
How's the similarity!
I will follow up shortly with a blog on excessively styling jewels with my own collection, so keep an eye out.
Finally, in answer to my dear friend, this will most definitely be my grandma style, as it is currently! "Grand-darlings, careful of the necklace!"
Love
Elle Effe x
